Hunting with the Concentric and DD Coils

As was stated previously, the characteristics of these 2 coils are different as to their ability to “see” what is in the ground. First, we need to state that the DD coil will handle highly mineralized soil better because the “working ” part of the coil is a straight center line, front to back of the coil, thus less minerals are actually influencing the circuitry of the coil. With the concentric, on the other hand, all soil under the coil has an influence on it. Imagine a single target underneath a single straight line, that target is all that the detector has to process. Imagine a round concentric 10″ coil with a number of targets underneath it. Now, circumstances have changed. All targets under the coil are now vying for the circuitry of the detector and the closest and/or largest target sending back the strongest signal (eddy current) will be detected. All the while, good targets underneath the coil may be lost due to the more electrically prominent response. In conclusion, if the area that is being hunted is relatively free of trash, then the concentric coil may be the better coil to use. If you do not have a DD coil and you are in a more trashy area, slow the coil speed down and allow the detector more time to process all the incoming signals. By doing this, you may be able to hear a good signal that would have been missed or ignored by the faster swing.

The Concentric and The DD Coil

Some individuals are not familiar with the difference in the DD (Widescan) Coil and the Concentric Coil. But to begin with just a simple statement of explanation, a coil is simply a send/receive circuit with the configuration of the windings determining its characteristics. The concentric coil, which is most widely used, is a coil in which the send/receiving windings are adjacent to one another, following the same pattern. In this configuration, the electronics of the detector, “sees” basically everything that is under the coil. In the DD coil, the windings are on opposite sides of the coil with them intersecting in the middle. That intersection, at the top of the coil to the back, forms a straight line and it is under that line only, that the detector “sees” targets… What does all of this mean when you and I go hunting….
